Global Fund for Women is one of the world’s leading foundations for gender equality, standing up for the human rights of women and girls. It campaigns for zero violence, economic and political empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Global Fund for Women uses its powerful network to rally advocates, raise money, and get support to where it’s most urgently needed. It funds and partners with women-led groups who are courageously fighting for justice in their own communities. This rights-based approach gets to the root of gender inequality and is the most effective way to create permanent social change.
Since 1987, Global Fund for Women has invested in nearly 5,000 grassroots groups in 175 countries, helping to win rights for millions of women and girls.
What We Do
We campaign for zero violence, economic and political empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. These are the most critical building blocks for women’s human rights. Our Goal
All women are economically secure and independent and are supported by policies ensuring women’s and girls’ equal rights to resources, livelihoods and political voice.
What We Do
We support advocacy for economic and legal reform and women’s equal participation in local and national elections and economies. We support democracy movements and efforts to secure land, labor and property rights.
Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights
Our Goal
All women and girls are free to make their own reproductive and sexual choices. Sexual and reproductive health services and information are readily available.
What We Do
We support campaigns, service delivery, advocacy and education to influence attitudes and achieve policy change that secures women’s and girls’ full access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
History of the Global Fund
Global Fund for Women was founded in 1987 in Palo Alto, California, by four bold women: Anne Firth Murray, Frances Kissling, Laura Lederer, and Nita Barrow. They were convinced that women’s human rights were essential to social, economic, and political change around the world, for the benefit of us all. Frustrated by a lack of interest in funding women’s human rights, they founded an organization to fund grass-roots women-led movements directly. They knew that by trusting their grantee partners to tackle the problems they were uniquely qualified to solve, permanent change would happen. They were right.
